LG Chem became a partner of the Social Value Initiative in 2021. During the onboarding training this first case study was done. LG Chem presents in this case study an evaluation of two potential value chains of recycled polycarbonate. After a materiality assessment the relevant social topics were assessed for the stakeholder group workers.
Fuji Oil is a Japanese company focussing on Plant Based Solutions for a Sustainable Society. One of the products is shea butter, which is extracted from the fruits of shea trees growing in the wild in Africa. The case study focusses on the social conditions of women collecting these fruits in Ghana. The study does not only show the impacts, but is especially interesting as it describes the how to overcome challenges of collecting data. The study was also replicated using the UNEP Guidance for Social LCA as the SVI took part in the testing. The report and the UNEP version will soon be posted here.

The third casestudy was performed by LG Chemicals from Korea. Currently there are no plans to publish this casestudy, but we are working on a report describing the possibilities and benefits of our approach for Korea.

It is increasingly clear such needs and market trends will be highly influenced by the transition towards a sustainable society. The internationally agreed Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) are a clear source of inspiration as it makes clear what the world is targeting by 2030. More recent trends confirming this, are developments like Green Deals, the Due Diligence legislation, Taxonomy, and the trend towards Integrated Reporting addressing the needs of the financial communities.
An important tool to prepare for this future world is Portfolio Assessment, which aims to understand which parts of the portfolio are challenged by these developments and which can be understood as a winner in the future. Portfolio Assessment often focusses only on the environmental and economic capitals, while the SDGs and other sustainability frameworks also explicitly address the social and human capitals. In this white paper we show how two proactive partners of the Social Value Initiative1 use the PSIA Handbook2 to consistently add also the social and human capital perspective.
The purpose of this white paper is to inspire companies that want to add the social angle to their portfolio management. The white paper is based on the collaborative effort of two proactive members of our initiative: DSM and Corbion who, together with PRé developed this whitepaper during 2021 and 2022

The Whitepaper captures the inputs and discussions between Alexandra Florea from DSM and Ana Morao from Corbion and focusses on three questions:

• Strategy and Policy: How to embed a purpose driven strategy with clear objectives
• Methodology: How to efficiently and effectively assess impacts
• Process: How to embed these procedures in the organization

DSM and Corbion developed consistent procedures to include social assessments in their procedures, both are using the Handbook as the key reference. The PSIA Handbook provides the basis for defining the relevant and material social topics and procedures to understand both the value chain impacts and especially the impact on the users. While discussing the different approaches of the companies, we found that there are a number of choices that are interesting as an input to further discussions and development.

The discussions cantered around three questions:

Why are we looking for improved reporting?

How is improved reporting implemented?

What are the benefits of using the Handbook in improved reporting?

In the report the answers are provided that can be summarised as follows:

Why are we looking for improved reporting?

The primamry reason for all three is that the companies had already formuleted ambitions targets and policies, and all feld they needed to further develop the metrics to support these policies. There is also a strong connection to the upcoming regulations such as the Due dilligence and Taxonomy law in Europe and other reporting requirements

How is improved reporting implemented?

The companies in this group had a similar procedure, which usually has the following steps:

Materiality assessment and hotspot analysis in the value chain (similar to what is described in the Handbook

Management approach, including target setting, development of governance structure, data collection

Impact assessment and preparing the communication do different audiences and preparing for upcoming legislation.

What are the benefits of using the Handbook in improved reporting?

The materiality assessment, and the availability of a well defined broad scope social topics were a very important contribution to the improved reporting cycle. It helped toprovide focus and itsupported target setting. Another important benefit is the approach to screen the entire scope three in the hotspot identification phase and the data tools we discovered and started to use during our journey. This is very important as most ESG reporting focusses not further then tier 1 of the supply-chain. The Due Diligence legislation typically requires to identify social hotspots in the entire value chain.

It also contains many links to important data sources for each topic.

In 2020 all social topics where reviewed and better linkages were made with international standards and guidelines. This also resulted in a new set-up of the reference scales with clear guidance on how you can develop from an unacceptable situation to the development of positive impact and therefore a contribution to shared value.

After using this new topic report on a number of case studies, we found some things needed clarification an some inconsistencies were found. At the same time, we wanted to keep the reference scales unchanged, so studies using the 2020 version, would be compatible with studies made with the 2022 version. The main clarifications and improvements in this version are:

Better definitions of the stakeholder categories, especially when is a worker a worker, and when can we consider it to be a small-scale entrepreneur? Similarly, when is someone a small-scale entrepreneur and when is someone to be regarded as a member of the local community.

Better description of the company responsibility when it is contracting small scale entrepreneurs or workers only a few month per year, for instance during harversting.

More guidance on dealing with overlaps between social topics

Better explanation of frequently used terms, such as: "management system", "policy, "scientific evidence" etc,

Better or better described definitions of topics

Ad-hoc case studies as described in the Handbook are a great way to explore and learn about the business value of social metrics. However, when the company grows in maturity more and more departments get involved and after some time the method is formalized and integrated in the different policies of the company such as the Code of Conduct and reporting mechanisms.

The Implementation Guide therefore is written to describe this process and assist companies to implement social assessment in the organization. The Guide is based on the Maturity Matrix concept, which describes four stages of development towards maturity. It is based on what we learned about the growth in maturity during the different phases of the Roundtable and follows in detail the experiences of the different companies in the Roundtable.

Companies can perform a self-assessment to determine at which stage they are and set the ambitions for the development over the coming period. Below the result is shown of the self-assessment of the members in 2019.

The Methodology Report describes the scientific basis for the selection of the social topics and the way the scales are built. The selection of topics is based on our understanding about how companies are dependent on social, human and other capitals in the society they operate in and how they have a contributing or detrimental influence on these.

Each company needs a society that functions well and has a healthy well-educated workforce. If no suitably skilled workforce is available, or if there are many tensions which hampers groups of people to cooperate and communicate, it will have negative effects on the company. The availability of healthy, educated people are examples of characteristics we refer to as the Human Capital of a society. The quality of relationships and the interaction within the society can be seen as the Social Capital in a society. Societies also consist of Natural Capital, Financial and Manufactured Capital such as infrastructure or electricity.

While recognising the dependencies, we can also assess whether companies contribute or have a detrimental effect on these capitals. Examples of contributions are in training, avoiding accidents, sharing infrastructure etc. The picture above illustrates the dependency on the capital flows on the input side and the contribution of the flows at the output side.

Once the topics have been selected the topic scales needed to be constructed. The scales are based on three ideas: setting the baseline (zero level), describing indicators to flag the detrimental behaviour and describing indicators for contributing to the societal capitals. For describing the contributions, we used to Theory of Change to understand what we want to assess. Our focus is on assessing outputs, as we think it is far too difficult to assess outcomes and impacts, as for instance it can take years before an activity results in a substantial outcome.

Below an example is given on how the scale for Occupational Health and Safety for workers is defined in the Social Topics report. The first column contains the scale levels; the second contains the description of the level and the third provides the performance indicators. These are generally described as true/false. Data collection is done on the performance indicator level; not that only one Performance indicator needs to be assessed. The introduction of the report provides some further instructions. For a deeper understanding of how the scales have been developed we refer to chapter 4 of the Methodology Report.

Uniquely, the methodology focuses on assessing social impacts of products and services over the entire value chain. This approach is sometimes also referred to as Social Lifecycle Assessment or Social LCA. The Handbook provides a pragmatic step by step guidance to explore and apply this new metric in your first case studies. It contains plenty of guidance in the data collection, hotspot identification, circular economy and impact assessment. Intially the handbook was focused on product, and followed the LCA concepts, but we found it to be also extremely useful to use it for product portfolios, brands and even for strenghening reporting

It is important to be aware of some key differences between environmental life cycle approaches and social life cycle approaches. Social LCA is not just an extension of environmental LCA. While we can assume 1 kg of CO2 is half as bad as 2 kg we cannot say 10 slaves working is half as serious as 20 slaves working. Companies want zero slaves, but do accept some CO2 emissions. Likewise we can more or less predict a range of emissions of steelmaking as many companies use the same blast furnace technologies, some will do this more efficient than others. The social impacts with steel manufacturing however can vary widely between two different companies. In fact the conditions in a steel company can be as bad as in a cotton farm. There is a very weak correlation between the technology and the social conditions. This difference has huge consequences for the data collection procedures.

There are four basic steps in the Handbook, (1) Prepare, (2) define Goal and Scope, (3) identify Hotspots and (4) apply our impact assessment procedures. The Reference guide below summarises the entire procedure
